The contrabassflute was designed (recently changed) to perform as a solo instrument as well as a bass instrument in choirs. Important condition for this is that the flute plays well in the bottom register, that it produces more decibels than other flutes. To achieve this the diameter of the flute is wider than average.
This contrabass flute really meets both purposes.

To give the player some relief, although the amount of air needed really is not as much as one would think, a microphone is optional. One could tear a building down if wanted.

For recorder players there is the “fipple” headpiece.
